%X El presente trabajo compara la duraci車n absoluta de las vocales de tres grupos de hablantes del espa ol de la provincia de  uble (Chile): urbano alto, urbano bajo y rural bajo. Los datos ac迆sticos muestran que se manifiesta una relaci車n entre estrato social y duraci車n voc芍lica: mientras m芍s cercano a la urbe y m芍s alto sea el estrato social del hablante, menor ser芍 la duraci車n de sus vocales y viceversa. Las explicaciones que pueden fundamentar este fen車meno est芍n relacionadas con la mayor o menor tensi車n articulatoria, pero tambi谷n con factores extraling邦赤sticos como la concepci車n del tiempo de los informantes y la mayor o menor familiaridad con la situaci車n comunicativa establecida para obtener las grabaciones. The present work compares the absolute length of three groups of speakers of Spanish of the  uble province (Chile): urban upper middle class, urban lower class and rural lower class. The acoustic data shows a relationship between social status and vowels length. The closer to the urban centre and the higher the social class of the speakers the shorter their vowels and vice versa. The facts that can explain this phenomenon are related to more or less articulatory tension. However, it is also related to extra linguistic aspects such as the conception of time of the subjects, as well as the degree of familiarity with the communicative situation of the sample recording process.
