%X Over the last decade, the Proyecto Arqueol車gico Porco-Potos赤 has investigated the Bolivian mining center of Porco in order to examine silver production under the Inka, Spanish, and Republican regimes. One focus of this research is the ways in which metallurgy was shaped by Porco's incorporation into the colonial world. After 1572, mercury amalgamation was the dominant method for refining silver ores, but at Porco, smelting technologies continued in use and were particularly varied. This paper represents a first step towards understanding this variability. It examines two technologies, native huayrachinas and European reverberatory furnaces, in order to determine how they functioned and were modified over time. We address this issue by describing their disposition within the archaeological record, assessing their use through slag analysis, and finally examining their historical development. Durante la 迆ltima d谷cada, el Proyecto Arqueol車gico Porco-Potos赤 ha investigado el centro minero boliviano de Porco para examinar la producci車n deplata bajo los gobiernos de los Inka, los espa oles y la Rep迆blica. Un enfoque de estos estudios ha examinado las maneras en que la metalurgia fue cambiando cuando Porco se incorpor車 al mundo colonial. Aunque desde 1572 la amalgamaci車n del mercuriofue el m谷todo Jyredominante para refinar el mineral de plata, en Porco las tecnolog赤as de fundici車n continuaban en uso, con bastantes variaciones. Este art赤culo representa un primer paso para entender esta variabilidad. Se examinan dos tecnolog赤as, las huayrachinas nativas, y los hornos de reverbero europeos, para determinar c車mo funcionaban y c車mo fueron modificados en el tiempo. Abordamos este tema con una descripci車n de su disposici車n dentro del registro arqueol車gico, evaluando su uso a trav谷s del an芍lisis de escorias, y, finalmente, examinando su desarrollo hist車rico.
