%X Frente a la importancia que han adquirido durante los ¨²ltimos a os los estudios clim¨¢ticos, sumado a la necesidad de encontrar nuevas fuentes que permitan elaborar registros cada vez m¨¢s completos e integrados sobre el clima del pasado, complementando as¨ª lo que ya se est¨¢ haciendo a trav¨¦s del estudio de anillos de ¨¢rboles, testigos de hielo y sedimentos lacustres, se ha considerado que la documentaci¨®n hist¨®rica, generada a partir de la llegada de los espa oles al continente sudamericano, puede entregar valiosa informaci¨®n sobre diversos fen¨®menos meteorol¨®gicos, permitiendo elaborar registros temporales m¨¢s extensos de dichos eventos. Es por ello que en este trabajo se describen y, en la medida de lo posible, se analizan, las principales fuentes documentales para la reconstrucci¨®n del clima en la regi¨®n sur de Chile (40 - 51o S) durante los ¨²ltimos 450 a os, dando cuenta de la forma en que se generaron, el tipo de informaci¨®n que pueden entregar y los lugares donde se conservan. Los registros clim¨¢ticos provienen de cr¨®nicas, relatos de viajeros, informes de las autoridades de los gobiernos locales, naturalistas y cient¨ªficos, entre otros, y que han sido conservados y publicados en archivos p¨²blicos, diarios y revistas, as¨ª como mapas antiguos, fotograf¨ªas, dibujos y otros soportes gr¨¢ficos m¨¢s recientes. Esta investigaci¨®n form¨® parte de proyectos interdisciplinarios cuyo objetivo fue estudiar la historia ambiental y los cambios clim¨¢ticos ocurridos en esa regi¨®n desde distintas perspectivas paleoclim¨¢ticas, tales como la dendrocronolog¨ªa y la glaciolog¨ªa. Given the importance that climatologic studies have acquired in the last few years, plus the need to find new sources that allow creating a registry ever more complete and integrated about the climate in the past, complementing what is already being done through the study of tree rings, ice cores and lake sediments, it has been considered that historic documentation, generated since the arrival of the Spaniards to the south American continent, can provide valuable information about diverse meteorological phenomena, allowing for the creation of longer temporary registries about such events. Hence this work describes and analyzes the main documentary sources for the reconstruction of the climate in the southern region of Chile (40 to 51o S) during the last 450 years; accounting for the way they were generated, the type of information they can provide and the places where they are conserved.
