%X A cause de l'aspect fragment¨¦ du narratif des romans La Tentation de saint Antoine et Bouvard et P¨¦cuchet de Gustave Flaubert, ces deux  uvres se montrent comme des anomalies en comparaison de ses autres romans. Toutefois, l'auteur a pass¨¦ des d¨¦cennies ¨¤ parfaire ses deux textes. En effet, il est retourn¨¦ trois fois ¨¤ La Tentation, un texte qu'il a d¨¦clar¨¦   plus ¨¦trange que beau  , et il a consacr¨¦ des ann¨¦es ¨¤ la recherche de la mati¨¨re et de la forme de Bouvard et P¨¦cuchet, ce qui sugg¨¨re un projet auquel Flaubert n'a pas cess¨¦ de s'int¨¦resser. Si ces deux romans semblent donc marquer un ¨¦cart par rapport ¨¤ l' uvre du romancier, ils ont en fait r¨¦sult¨¦ de deux lignes d'int¨¦r¨ºt qui se manifestent ¨¤ plusieurs reprises le long de son  uvre : des formes th¨¦atrales et la potentialit¨¦ po¨¦tique de la forme narrative. Cette analyse rend compte de la po¨¦tique de la discontinuit¨¦ et de son rapport et aux formes du th¨¦atre populaire au milieu du XIXe si¨¨cle et aux caract¨¦ristiques ¨¦mergeantes de la modernit¨¦, notamment l'effet de la fragmentation sur la conscience moderne. The curiously fragmented form of Gustave Flaubert's La Tentation de saint Antoine and his final and incomplete novel Bouvard et P¨¦cuchet seems anomalous in comparison to his more well-known works. However, these works occupied Flaubert's consciousness over decades of his lifetime. Indeed, he returned three times to La Tentation, a text he characterized as ¡°plus ¨¦trange que beau¡±, and devoted years of research to Bouvard et P¨¦cuchet, suggesting a project of equally enduring interest for the writer. If these two novels seem to stand apart from the rest of his opus, they were in fact the fruit of two abiding lines of interest for the author: theatrical forms and the poetic potential of narrative form, explored through tableaux and fragmentation. This analysis considers the poetics of discontinuity and its relationship both to popular theatrical forms of mid-nineteenth-century France and to emerging characteristics of modernity, notably fragmented consciousness.
