%X Fundamento: el c¨¢ncer de tiroides es el carcinoma endocrino m¨¢s com¨²n, aunque solo represente un 1% del total de tipos c¨¢ncer. Su incidencia parece aumentar un 4% cada a o, y en la actualidad es el octavo c¨¢ncer m¨¢s frecuente en mujeres, apareciendo fundamentalmente en las edades comprendidas entre los 25 y 65 a os. Objetivo: caracterizar el comportamiento del c¨¢ncer de tiroides en la provincia de Cienfuegos. M¨¦todos: se realiz¨® un estudio descriptivo, ambiespectivo, de corte longitudinal, con un total de 62 pacientes operados en el servicio de Cirug¨ªa General del hospital Dr. Gustavo Alderegu¨ªa Lima, durante el quinquenio 2006-2010. Las variables estudiadas: tasas de incidencia anual, edad, sexo, localizaci¨®n y tipo histol¨®gico del tumor, y estado actual de los pacientes. Resultados: el mayor n¨²mero de pacientes correspondi¨® al sexo femenino, siendo el carcinoma papilar la variante histol¨®gica m¨¢s diagnosticada (85,19 %). La incidencia mayor se registr¨® en el a o 2010. El grupo edades de 41 a 50 a os fue el m¨¢s representativo. El mayor n¨²mero de c¨¢nceres (79,03 %) se diagnosticaron en el estadio I. Conclusiones: la propia incidencia elevada del c¨¢ncer de tiroides en la provincia de Cienfuegos, en los ¨²ltimos cinco a os, ha hecho que la vigilancia sobre esta afecci¨®n se haya incrementado, lo cual se evidencia por el diagn¨®stico en etapas tempranas, resultado de este estudio. Background: Thyroid cancer is the most common endocrine carcinoma, even when it represents only 1% of all cancers. Its incidence appears to increase in a 4% each year, and today is the eighth most common cancer among women, appearing mainly in the ages between 25 and 65 years old. Objective: To characterize the behaviour of thyroid cancer in the province of Cienfuegos. Methods: A descriptive, ambispective and longitudinal study was conducted with a total of 62 patients operated on at the General Surgery Service of the Dr. Gustavo Alderegu¨ªa Lima Hospital from 2006 to 2010. The variables analyzed included: annual incidence rates, age, sex, location and histological type of tumour, and current status of patients. Results: There were more female patients, being papillary carcinoma the most commonly diagnosed histologic variant (85.19%). The highest incidence was registered in 2010. The age group from 41 to 50 years old was the most representative. The largest number of cancers (79.03%) was diagnosed in stage I.
