%0 Journal Article %T Immigrants in the United States: ¡°Illegal Aliens¡± On Their Way To Becoming Emergent ¡°Possible Subjects¡± %A Catherine Lejeune %J European Journal of American Studies %D 2009 %I European Association for American Studies %R 10.4000/ejas.7725 %X In the likely event that immigration reform will be discussed again in the U.S. Congress in the year 2010, the circumstances and events that have led to the current state of affairs will here be analysed: firstly, the immigration policies implemented from 9/11 until the failed attempt at reforming immigration legislation; secondly, the complex array of recent local and state initiatives which have increasingly served as a substitute for federal immigration control and management. As I examine this evolution and the conflict it has generated, I will devote special attention to undocumented immigrants: from the harsh treatment to which they were subjected during the Bush presidency to the conditions in which they have come to mobilize and have emerged as political actors, even to the point of transforming ideas of citizenship and related rights. %U http://ejas.revues.org/7725
