%X This paper contributes to the debate about the ideological coherence of the Brazilian party system. Using discriminant function analysis of 20 years of surveys of Brazilian legislators, we find that the party system now exhibits relatively little coherence. Though the Worker¡¯s Party (PT) is clearly distinct, no clear ideological differences exist between the placement of the system¡¯s three other main parties. Moreover, the spatial distance between the PT and the other parties is diminishing over time. Given the importance of a coherent ideological map to any consolidated party system, we question the notion that the Brazilian party system has gradually consolidated. Indeed, our results suggest the opposite: in recent years the Brazilian party system has become relatively more ¡°inchoate.¡± Este artigo ¨¦ uma contribui  o ao debate sobre a coer¨ºncia ideol¨®gica do sistema partid¨¢rio brasileiro. Utilizando um m¨¦todo de an¨¢lise baseado em fun  es discriminantes de 20 anos de surveys dos legisladores brasileiros, mostramos que o sistema partid¨¢rio do pa¨ªs exibe relativamente pouca coer¨ºncia. Conquanto o Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT) seja claramente distinto, nenhuma diferen a ideol¨®gica existe entre os outros tr¨ºs partidos importantes. Al¨¦m do mais, a distancia espacial entre o PT e os outros partidos tem diminu¨ªdo ao longo do tempo. Dada a importancia de um coerente espectro ideol¨®gico para qualquer sistema partid¨¢rio consolidado,questionamos a no  o segundo a qual o sistema partid¨¢rio brasileiro est¨¢ se consolidando gradativamente. De fato, nossos resultados sugerem o contr¨¢rio: nos ¨²ltimos anos o sistema partid¨¢rio brasileiro tornou-se relativamente mais ¡°rudimentar¡±.
