%T The Right in ¡°New Left¡± Latin America La derecha en tiempos de la nueva izquierda en Am¨¦rica Latina

%X Over the past decade, there has been a surge of ¡°new Left¡± governments in Latin America, yet polling data shows no comparable shift to the left among the general Latin American population. If electorates have not followed their political leaders to the left, then it is likely that new right-wing political actors will emerge to compensate for the leftward shift in Latin American politics. I propose a research agenda for studying right-wing politics in light of the current wave of left-leaning governments in the region. I argue that we should focus on four main areas of right-wing politics: the political agenda of right-wing groups; their political organization; their power capability; and the institutional environment in which they operate. This agenda requires that we move beyond the traditional focus on right-wing political parties and focus on right-wing organizations at all levels of formal politics, as well as groups that operate outside the formal political arena. Durante la ¨²ltima d¨¦cada han surgido en Am¨¦rica Latina varios gobiernos de la llamada ¡°nueva izquierda.¡± Sin embargo, las encuestas no muestran un movimiento correspondiente hacia la izquierda en la opini¨®n p¨²blica. Si los electorados latinoamericanos no siguen a algunos de sus l¨ªderes hacia la izquierda es muy probable que pronto veamos la (re)emergencia de actores pol¨ªticos de corte derechista. Este ensayo propone un marco te¨®rico y una agenda para el an¨¢lisis de estos actores de derecha. Aqu¨ª se argumenta que deber¨ªamos enfocarnos en cuatro temas principales: las agendas pol¨ªticas de los grupos de derecha, sus formas de organizaci¨®n pol¨ªtica, sus capacidades de aglutinar y usar varias fuentes de poder pol¨ªtico, econ¨®mico y social, y el ambiente institucional que servir¨¢ de contexto para su enfrentamiento con otros actores pol¨ªticos. Esta agenda implica un cambio en los enfoques tradicionales sobre el estudio de la derecha que han puesto fuerte ¨¦nfasis en los partidos pol¨ªticos. En cambio, aqu¨ª propongo mover el an¨¢lisis m¨¢s all¨¢ y observar los diferentes tipos de organizaciones de derecha tanto a nivel local como nacional y tanto en sus manifestaciones informales como formales.
