The Atlantic entanglements on the eve of the independence of Latin America fostered the circulation of knowledge of the Enlightenment and of the revolutions in the United States and France. Although internal reasons like imperial reforms ultimately triggered the independence, the exchange of knowledge laid the foundations for the independence movements. The case of Haiti, symbol for the violent abolition of slavery, shows that the exchange of knowledge was not unidirectional.
