%X Los actuales sistemas democr¨¢ticos latinoamericanos forman parte de lo que Samuel Huntington llama la tercera ola democratizadora. Sin embargo, es innegable que en los ¨²ltimos a os han surgido nuevas din¨¢micas pol¨ªticas que han transformado el mapa pol¨ªtico de la regi¨®n y que plantean desaf¨ªos -de corte autoritario para algunos- a la democracia en el continente. Este trabajo tiene como objetivo contribuir a la comprensi¨®n de las mismas, primero, abordando el problema de las definiciones conceptuales sobre democracia y autoritarismo; segundo, observando algunos antecedentes hist¨®ricos de la regi¨®n y, por ¨²ltimo, proponiendo preliminarmente que lo que Guillermo O'Donnell llama democracia delegativa es una expresi¨®n del nuevo caudillismo y, a su vez, de un nuevo tipo de democracia, que es democr¨¢tica en cuanto se basa en el apoyo de la mayor¨ªa, pero no lo es, en tanto menoscaba derechos individuales, debilita las instituciones de control y disminuye los mecanismos de responsabilidad pol¨ªtica. La metodolog¨ªa utilizada consiste en realizar una comparaci¨®n entre los principales referentes te¨®ricos sobre democracia y autoritarismo, y la evidencia hist¨®rica y actual de las acciones de gobiernos de varios pa¨ªses del continente en los ¨²ltimos a os. The current democratic systems in Latin America would be part of what Samuel Huntington called the third wave of democratization. However it is undeniable that in recent years new political dynamics have emerged that have transformed the political map of the region and pose challenges, for some of an authoritarian kind, to democracy in the continent. This work aims to contribute to the understanding of those dynamics, first, addressing the problem of conceptual definitions for democracy and authoritarianism, second, reviewing some historical background of the region and finally proposing that what Guillermo O'Donnell preliminarily called delegative democracy would be an expression of the new warlordism, which in turn is the expression of a new type of democracy that is democratic in that it relies on the support of majorities, but not a democracy on the sense that it undermines individuals rights, weakens institutions of control, and decreases the mechanisms of political accountability. The methodology used was to make a comparison between the main theoretical references on democracy and authoritarianism and, historical evidence and current actions of governments in various nations of the region in recent years.
