These statistics have sparked a widespread debate about whether people are taking far more medication than is needed for problems that may not even be mental disorders. To help settle this long-standing dispute, the author studied why the number of recognized psychiatric disorders has ballooned so dramatically in recent decades. He concludes that over-medication would affect fewer people if over-diagnosis could be reined in. The thresholds for psychiatric diagnosis would have to be set a lot higher, resurrecting a now-lost distinction between chronic illness and mild suffering. %K DSM-III %K DSMIV %K DSMV %K DSM5: MDE-III %K MDE-IV %K MDE-5 %K MDE-V %K sanitarismo %K medicina sanitaria %K salud p¨²blica %K salud mental %K pol¨ªticas p¨²blicas %U http://electroneubio.secyt.gov.ar/Chr_Lane_La_gran_ansiedad.htm
