%X J. Habermas¡¯s theory of modern society has been extremely influent on the theoretical and political spheres of the last thirty years. Habermas seeked to develop a philosophical foundation of modern democratic society. Nonetheless, his conception of modern society as composed by two levels, lifeworld and systems, has been questioned for its incoherence with the democratic foundations of his social theory. The present article intends to criticise this dimension of Habermas¡¯s theory of society. It discusses the epistemological bases of his distinction between lifeworld and systems, and shows its philosophical problems as well as political implications. La teor¨ªa de la sociedad moderna de J. Habermas ha sido enormemente influyente en los planos te¨®rico y pol¨ªtico en los ¨²ltimos treinta a os. Habermas pretendi¨® realizar una fundamentaci¨®n filos¨®fica de la sociedad democr¨¢tica moderna. En cambio, su concepci¨®n de la sociedad moderna como estructurada en dos niveles, mundo de la vida y sistemas, ha sido cuestionada por su incoherencia con los fundamentos democr¨¢ticos de su teor¨ªa social. El presente art¨ªculo realiza una aportaci¨®n a la cr¨ªtica de esta dimensi¨®n de la teor¨ªa de la sociedad de Habermas. Discute las bases epistemol¨®gicas de su distinci¨®n entre mundo de la vida y sistemas, mostrando sus d¨¦ficit filos¨®ficos y sus problem¨¢ticas implicaciones pol¨ªticas.
