%X During most of the 16th century, the town of Pontevedra was recorder as the most dynamic urban centre of the Galician kingdom for its economy based on fishing and sea trade. In contrast with the traditional view which has always regarded the seamen from Rias Baixas as coastal fishermen, Pontevedra's historical legal documents from the Sisteenth Century provide evidence of their presence in Newfoundland and the Canary Island fishing grounds. In the light of this evidence, those seamen appear as faithful continuers of a tradition of seafaring relationships with foreign countries dating back to the late Middle Ages. Durante buena parte del siglo XVI la villa de Pontevedra aparece como el mayor y m¨¢s din¨¢mico n¨²cleo urbano del Reino de Galicia, con una econom¨ªa asentada en la pesca y el comercio mar¨ªtimo. Frente a la visi¨®n tradicional, que considera a los hombres del mar de las R¨ªas Baixas gallegas como pescadores de bajura, la documentaci¨®n notarial pontevedresa del siglo XVI informa de su presencia tanto en Terranova como en el banco de pesca canario. De esta forma se muestran f¨ªeles continuadores de una vocaci¨®n de relaci¨®n con el exterior por v¨ªa mar¨ªtima presente desde la Baja Edad Media.
