%X El ascenso de George W. Bush a la presidencia carece de un verdadero precedente en la historia de los Estados Unidos. Es cierto que en tres elecciones previas (1824, 1876 y 1888) ocurri車 que un candidato ganara el voto popular y el otro el voto electoral, pero 谷sa no fue la caracter赤-stica definitoria de este elecci車n. La m芍s insigne de las tres elecciones discutibles anteriores fue la de 1876, durante la cual los pol赤-ticos profesionales de los dos partidos principales intentaron llevar a cabo un acuerdo tras bambalinas, que diera la espalda al voto popular. Pero s車lo una de las elecciones presidenciales anteriores se caracteriz車 por la manipulaci車n y la intimidaci車n, por intervenciones abiertamente sesgadas de parte de funcionarios del Estado y de la Corte, por la privaci車n de los derechos de los africano-americanos, y por el en谷rgico mensaje de que despu谷s de la elecci車n no habr赤-a paz si ganaba el bando equivocado. Esa fue la elecci車n de 1860, que precipit車 la Guerra Civil. The George W. Bush ascent to the presidency lacks a true precedent in the United States History. It is true that in three previous elections (1824, 1876 and 1888) it happened that a candidate gained the popular vote and the other the electoral vote. But that was not the distinctive characteristic of that election. The plus insigne of the three previous debatable elections was the 1876 one, during which the professional politicians of both partys tried to carry out an agreement after borders that the back gave to the popular vote. But only one of previous presidential elections characterized for the manipulation and the intimidation, for interventions openly slanted from civil employees of the State and the Court, for the deprivation of the African-Americans"  rights, and for the energetic message of which after the election there would not be peace if it gained the mistaken party.
