%X Este art¨ªculo se aboca al estudio del suicidio en Yucat¨¢n durante el porfiriato; su objetivo radica en entender las preconcepciones que se ten¨ªan acerca de los suicidas. El aporte de este trabajo consiste en interpretar la forma en la que eran percibidos y descritos estos personajes a partir de las notas de la prensa decimon¨®nica y en las actas judiciales, pero analizados en relaci¨®n con el auge industrializador de la ¨¦poca. En com¨²n hab¨ªa un sentimiento de l¨¢stima que despertaban los suicidas, pero antes de sentir tal pesar trataban de buscar alguna causa que hiciera entendible el porqu¨¦ se hab¨ªan suicidado. En este sentido se analizan los casos de muerte voluntaria con una previa ambientaci¨®n del efecto modernizador de tal tiempo, todo ello con el objeto de entender mejor c¨®mo se gestaban este tipo de eventos. This articie on suicide in Yucat¨¢n during the Porfiriato seeks to understand the preconceptions about suicides. This paper's contribucion lies in the fact that it incerprets the way these characters were perceived and described on the basis of articles in the 19th century press and judicial records analyzed in connection with the industrial boom at the time. Suicides commonly elicited feelings of pity but before expressing this grief, efforts were made to find a reason that would explain why people had killed themselves. In this respect, the paper analyzes the cases of voluntary death in light of the modernizing effect of the time in order to obtain a better understanding of how this type of events occurred.
