%X In this article we introduce the contributions of different authors to a critique of contemporary urban phenomena. We begin pinpointing both the relevance and the epistemic limits of the city in the frame of the social sciences. We then develop a series of arguments that stress the main limitations of the dominant trend in environmental psychology dedicated to the study of urban phenomena. Consequently, we advocate an interdisciplinary, critique, reflexive and comprehensive approach to the study of the city. Finally, we synthesise the texts composing the monograph. The aim is to provide some materials for an epistemological, theoretical and methodological critique of urban environmental psychology, on the one hand, and to promote the imagination as a powerful and thorough instrument of knowledge, on the other hand. En este art¨ªculo introductorio al n¨²mero monogr¨¢fico presentamos las contribuciones de sus diversos/as autores/as a una cr¨ªtica de los fen¨®menos urbanos contempor¨¢neos. Comenzamos el art¨ªculo con un breve apunte sobre la relevancia y los l¨ªmites epist¨¦micos de la ciudad en el marco de las ciencias sociales. Desarrollamos a continuaci¨®n una serie de argumentos que se alan las principales limitaciones de la corriente dominante en psicolog¨ªa ambiental dedicada al estudio de los fen¨®menos urbanos. Abogamos entonces por una aproximaci¨®n interdisciplinar, cr¨ªtica, reflexiva y comprensiva al estudio de la ciudad. Finalmente, hacemos una s¨ªntesis de los textos que componen al monogr¨¢fico, reunidos con el doble objetivo de ofrecer materiales para la cr¨ªtica epistemol¨®gica, te¨®rica y metodol¨®gica de la psicolog¨ªa ambiental urbana, por un lado, y fomentar la imaginaci¨®n como poderoso y riguroso instrumento de conocimiento sobre lo urbano, por otro lado.
