%X Cet article se penche sur le rapport de la conception r¨¦publicaine de la libert¨¦ comme non-domination d¨¦fendue par P. Pettit avec la conception de la libert¨¦ comme capabilit¨¦ propos¨¦e par A. Sen. L¡¯usage que fait Pettit de la conception d¨¦fendue par Sen lui permet d¡¯avancer une conception plus r¨¦aliste des pr¨¦f¨¦rences des individus en contexte social. Cette d¨¦finition des  pr¨¦f¨¦rences d¨¦cisives  guide toute sa d¨¦monstration de la compatibilit¨¦ de la libert¨¦ comme capabilit¨¦ avec la th¨¦orie n¨¦or¨¦publicaine. Elle lui permet en outre de donner une valeur particuli¨¨re ¨¤ l¡¯objectif social de lutte contre la pr¨¦carit¨¦, pr¨¦carit¨¦ comprise comme situation dans laquelle un individu est plac¨¦ sous la d¨¦pendance arbitraire d¡¯un autre en l¡¯emp¨ºchant de se mouvoir ¨¤ sa guise dans le jeu social. Nous examinons les enjeux de cette articulation ¨¤ la lumi¨¨re de la r¨¦ponse critique qui a ¨¦t¨¦ formul¨¦e par Sen ¨¤ l¡¯effet que la conception n¨¦or¨¦publicaine limitait trop la pluralit¨¦ sociale de la libert¨¦. Enfin, nous esquissons une mani¨¨re de r¨¦concilier l¡¯approche par les capabilit¨¦s avec la conception r¨¦publicaine.This paper evaluates the compatibility of P. Pettit¡¯s definition of republican freedom as non-domination, with the capability approach championed by A. Sen. Pettit make use of the capability approach in order to develop a more realistic conception of the preferences of individuals in social context. The relative conception of ¡°decisive preferences¡± supports his demonstration about the compatibility of republican freedom with the capabilities approach. This conception, in particular, gives central value to the social objective of fighting against social precariousness, understood as the arbitrary dependence of an individual towards another which hinders his capacity to move freely in the social world. Sen replied to Pettit that this reading has the effect of limiting the social pluralism of freedom. My discussion of this debate draws an intelligible line of reconciliation between the capability approach and republican freedom.
