This qualitative research analyzes how local wisdom is used in the management of commercial reed-mat production in Maha Sarakham Province, Thailand. Once-distinctive Thai reed-mats are now being mass-produced to cope with global demand, killing the economic viability of hand produced merchandise. This study identifies problems with materials, equipment, production process, product development and finance as causing a loss of unique character in reed-mat goods.
