Pour r¨¦duire les ¨¦checs et les abandons ¨¤ ces niveaux universitaires, bon nombre de recherches se focalisent sur le lien entre la qualit¨¦ de la supervision et la r¨¦ussite de l¡¯¨¦tudiant. Or, la relation p¨¦dagogique de supervision est une relation duale, le superviseur n¡¯est pas le seul acteur de la r¨¦ussite de l¡¯¨¦tudiant. Peu abord¨¦ dans la litt¨¦rature, nous questionnons dans cet article le r le de l¡¯¨¦tudiant dans sa propre r¨¦ussite. Des entretiens semi-directifs ont ¨¦t¨¦ men¨¦s aupr¨¨s de superviseurs et d¡¯¨¦tudiants, dans trois disciplines des sciences humaines et sociales et dans sept universit¨¦s fran aises. Les r¨¦sultats de cette enqu¨ºte montrent que l¡¯¨¦tudiant est le principal acteur de sa r¨¦ussite. Quelle que soit la qualit¨¦ r¨¦elle ou per ue de sa supervision, l¡¯¨¦tudiant en situation de r¨¦ussite est celui qui parvient ¨¤ faire preuve d¡¯autodirection. Nos donn¨¦es montrent que l¡¯autodirection se traduit de deux mani¨¨res principales avec, d¡¯une part la d¨¦couverte des implicites et, d¡¯autre part la capacit¨¦ de compensations des manques r¨¦els ou per us. Research supervision is an important factor of success in master and doctoral studies. To reduce failure and attrition at this level, numerous studies have focused on the link between the quality of supervision and student success. Since supervision is a two-way relationship, the supervisor is not the sole actor in determining the student¡¯s success. In this article we investigate the little-researched subject of the role of the student in his or her own success. Semi-directive interviews were conducted with supervisors and students in three disciplines in the social sciences and humanities in seven French universities. The results of this study show the student as the key actor in his or her success. Successful students were those who demonstrated self-direction, regardless of the real or perceived quality of supervision.
