While tried and tested in the classroom, Waldorf education is nonetheless underdeveloped with regard to its theoretical and scientific foundations. The epistemology of Rudolf Steiner, the founder of Waldorf education, set forth in his early work - particularly the concept of intuition as the central category of the capacity of knowledge - comprises the core elements of an independent thinking activity, an autonomy of thoughts and an intuitive exchange of both these elements. With regard to its anthropological relevance, Steiner¡¯s intuition-based epistemology thinks of the human being as capable of freedom. This forms the central basis in educational theory of Waldorf education, whose benchmark is to act according to the needs of a human being developing toward freedom. Key learning criteria of Waldorf education are outlined against the background of the concept of intuition. %K Waldorf Education %K concept of intuition %K intuition-based epistemology %U http://www.rosejourn.com/index.php/rose/article/viewFile/3/48
