The objectives of this article are the following: 1) to present the importance of the valorisation of culture in the context of growth and sustainable development after the Earth Summit ECO-92 (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil); 2) to discuss the insertion of culture in the Agenda 21 Global and Local Commitments, taking the example of the city of S o Paulo in Brazil. Today, more than ever, countries perceive that the recognition of cultural identity of their societies is a basic element of any type of transformation ¨C economic, social or environmental. It is clear as well that the integration of these aspects will only be possible on the basis of social inclusion and exercising citizenship, in order to respect diversity. This article also points out the importance of cultural tradition of people, society, groups and communities as well as the modalities of taking advantage of public policies that could be created to guarantee the freedom of the society in revealing and expressing its culture in the times of globalisation. Living in an environment where these three pillars of sustainable development should be brought in harmony, we could achieve a fairer, safer, more inclusive society and have a better quality of life. %K Sustainable Development %K Social inclusion %K citizenship %U http://www.vittimologia.it/rivista/articolo_pintoferreira_2012-03.pdf
