%X The purpose of this article is threefold: to describe a psychiatric nurse practitioner program that focuses specifically on primary care; 2) to discuss the rationale for a psychiatric nurse practitioner role; and 3) to discuss the advantages of this new role. The nurse practitioner in psychiatry expands advanced practice nursing with an optional but important new role.
