The case of Chaco 1970-2000 Jorge Pr¨®spero Roze In the beginning of the seventies we witnessed in the province of Chaco, Argentina, a series of conflicts. These were the result of an attempt to defend the territorial hegemony made by a middle class of cotton producers teamed up in cooperatives. The Cooperatives became a provincial line of defense, fighting for the territory against the monopoly of industrial capital that came from outside the region. Five years later, a process of internationalization of the cotton market increased the gravity of a crisis in the agrarian middle class to the point of almost dissolving it by the end of the century. Once again, in January 2000, there seems to be unity in the fractions of the middle class of Chaco, brought together by a summoning of Small Companies. Our conclusion is that the political and ideological consequences of the process of globalization show that the space in which these fractions move renders the exertion of an hegemony impossible. Even if this becomes a mean for the defense of their own existence. %U http://www.redalyc.org/articulo.oa?id=12400902
