Therefore the necessity to preserve the edges and fine details during filtering is the challenge faced by researchers today. This paper proposes a two-stage approach for detecting and removing of salt and pepper noise. In the first stage, The noise detection is based on simple thresholding of pixels.. In the second stage, these detected noise candidates will be restored by an improved adaptive fuzzy switching weighted median algorithm (FSWMA), while these noise-free pixels are left unchanged. In term of the conflict of noise suppression and edge-preserving, our proposed method takes fuzzy switching reasoning to handle it. The results show this method is good for noise reduction and image restoration especially in high level noisy images. %K Image denoising %K Impulse noise detection %K %K median algorithm %K edge-preserving %K salt-and-pepper noise %K fuzzy switching reasoning %K Switching Median Filter %U http://www.ijctee.org/files/VOLUME2ISSUE2/IJCTEE_0412_01.pdf
