%X The building of the S o Paulo-Rio Grande Railway in the Mid Southern region of Brazilian state of Parana in 1900 prompted the installationof many sawmills. To extract wood demanded enough manpower whichattracted many people for this activity. Not infrequently the sawmill workers had villages in the forest. This article attempts to reconstruct parts of the lives of workers in sawmills at Irati/PR.
