%X This article focuses on two narratives: "Mon¨®logo de Tuquinha Batista" and "O Telegrama de Ataxerxes", both featured in A Morte da Porta-Estandarte, Tati, a Garota e Outras Hist¨®rias (1965), a collection of thirteen accounts selected by the writer An¨ªbal Machado. Driven by dreams of change and improvement in economic conditions and social status, Tuquinha Batista and Ataxerxes behave themselves quite differently towards the state capital and each one set various courses of action, which tells us about the social inclusion of suburbanites and peasants in modernized Brazilian regions.
