Since then, the road and ¡°the on-the-road¡± has been a persistent theme of the United States culture, an emblem of the country and of its extraordinary history of geographical and social mobility. A literary tradition of novels and stories, movies, songs and photographic images represented the road, yet very few are the artists who developed the theme in painting.
