%X This article analyzes the use and meaning of memory in the fiction of Montserrat Roig. Catalan fairy tales often begin ¡°Aix¨° era i no era¡±, a formula which affirms and simultaneously denies the truth of the story; Roig felt a similar ambivalence about the history of Catalonia, which was incomplete and excluded the contributions of women. To recover lost voices, arrest amnesia and thus foster the writing of a more inclusive history, she turned to individual memory and to her own imagination: ¡°Against memory loss, there is the word. Against the finality of death, there is the story of other lives.¡± She committed herself to the writing of different versions of the past, some true, others imagined. To give universality to the fictional stories, she used various myths; this article traces her use of the myth of Genesis and the loss of the Garden of paradise. It concludes with an analysis of El canto de la juventud a late story which synthesizes her beliefs about memory, the word and history. Este art¨ªculo analiza el uso y el significado de la memoria en la obra narrativa de la escritora barcelonesa. Aix¨° era i no era, t¨ªpico comienzo de los cuentos de hadas, afirma a la vez que niega la verdad de la historia; Roig sent¨ªa una ambivalencia parecida hacia la historia de Catalu a, porque era incompleta y exclu¨ªa a las mujeres. Para recuperar voces perdidas, detener la desmemoria y as¨ª permitir la escritura de una historia m¨¢s inclusiva, recurri¨® a la memoria individual y a su propia imaginaci¨®n: ¡°Contra el olvido, est¨¢ la palabra. Contra la muerte total est¨¢ el relato de otras vidas¡±. Se dedic¨® a escribir diversas versiones del pasado, algunas ver¨ªdicas, otras imaginadas. Para universalizar las ficticias, emple¨® varios mitos; aqu¨ª se rastrea el uso que hizo del G¨¦nesis y su narraci¨®n del para¨ªso perdido. Se concluye con el an¨¢lisis de El canto de la juventud, un cuento tard¨ªo que sintetiza sus creencias sobre el recuerdo, la palabra y la historia.
