%X RESUMEN: Este art¨ªculo analiza Viaje a Ipanda y El mundo de los maharach¨ªas, dos novelas que han sido poco estudiadas por la cr¨ªtica arevaliana. En este art¨ªculo se insiste en la diferencia gen¨¦rica entre novela ut¨®pica y novela de ciencia  cci¨®n. A esta ¨²ltima categor¨ªa pertenecen las dos novelas de Ar¨¦valo. El hecho de que este autor escribiera novelas de ciencia  cci¨®n en la Guatemala de los a os 30, lo convierte en un pionero de las letras centroamericanas no solo a nivel est¨¦tico, sino tambi¨¦n a nivel ideol¨®gico.ABSTRACT: This article examines two novels by Rafael Ar¨¦valo Mart¨ªnez entitled Viaje a Ipanda and El mundo de los maharach¨ªas. The aim of it is to shed new light on novels too often disregarded by criticism and show that unlike what is commonly held¡ªthat both of them are ¡°utopian novels¡±¡ªViaje a Ipanda and El mundo de los maharach¨ªas must be understood as science  ction. Ar¨¦valo Mart¨ªnez s choice to write science  ction novels in the Guatemala of the 30 s makes him a pioneer of Central American literature, not only on an aesthetic level but also on an ideological one.
