%X The purpose of this article is to document some aspects of the sugar trade in fourteenth century Catalonia. More especially it aims to highlight the following paradox: Barcelonese traders regularly travelled to Eastern Mediterranean to fetch sugar, yet sugar cane had been introduced in the Iberian Peninsula as early as the tenth century. After presenting the main stages of sugar production until the fourteenth century, the author examines recent works on the history of sugar production in Eastern Mediterranean. He also reviews various documents on the exportation of sugar to Catalonia in the fourteenth century, mostly from the Barcelonese archives. The article ends with a table of the different kinds of sugar produced and exported during the period under review. Este art¨ªculo tiene por objeto presentar algunos aspectos del comercio catal¨¢n del az¨²car en el siglo XIV y, en particular, resolver la siguiente paradoja: los comerciantes barceloneses iban efectivamente de manera regular a buscar este producto en el Mediterr¨¢neo oriental cuando la ca a de az¨²car hab¨ªa sido introducida en la Pen¨ªnsula Ib¨¦rica desde el siglo X. Despu¨¦s de haber presentado las principales etapas de la expansi¨®n de este cultivo hasta el siglo XIV, el autor examina con detalle algunos trabajos recientes relativos a la producci¨®n de az¨²car en el Mediterr¨¢neo oriental as¨ª como los documentos que atestiguan su exportaci¨®n hacia Catalu a en el siglo XIV, centr¨¢ndose especialmente en las fuentes barcelonesas. El estudio se completa con un cuadro de los diferentes tipos de az¨²car encontrados.
