%X The aim of this paper is to present a literature review on the current model of cadaster of rural properties in Brazil and its development. To analyze such an understanding is made from the appearance of land grants in the period of colonization of Brazil showing the importance of a system of land cadaster in structuring real estate in the country throughout history. The design cadaster is given in different ways and are identified according to some definitions of institutions and countries or continents. Currently the National Registry of Rural Properties is governed in accordance with Law 10,267 of 2001 and the responsibility of the National Institute of Colonization and Agrarian Reform (INCRA).O objetivo desse artigo ¨¦ apresentar uma revis o de literatura sobre o atual modelo de cadastro de im¨®veis rurais no Brasil e o seu desenvolvimento. Para tal entendimento ¨¦ feita an¨¢lise desde o surgimento das sesmarias no per¨ªodo de coloniza  o do Brasil mostrando a importancia de um sistema de cadastro imobili¨¢rio na estrutura  o fundi¨¢ria do pa¨ªs ao longo da hist¨®ria. A concep  o de cadastro ¨¦ dada de diferentes maneiras e s o apontadas algumas defini  es de acordo com institui  es e pa¨ªses ou continentes. Atualmente o Cadastro Nacional de Im¨®veis Rurais ¨¦ regido de acordo com a Lei 10.267 de 2001 e de responsabilidade do Instituto Nacional de Coloniza  o e Reforma Agr¨¢ria (INCRA).
