%X The kiwano (Cucumis metuliferus) is an exotic species, belonging to the Cucurbitaceae family, possessing a great potential for commercialization. This study aimed to learn more about the culture of kiwanothrough its initial growth on different substrates, since there are few works related to this culture. The study was carried out in a greenhouse in Alegre-ES, a completely randomized design with four replications. The treatmentsconsisted of the following substrates: Plantmax , composed of legume Acacia sp; composed of rice husk carbornized + humus, composed of corn stover + manure and compost humus + vermiculite. At 28 days after sowing wereevaluated height, fresh weight and dry weight of seedlings. The substrate Plantmax  was more effective in the initial spread of the kiwano, with statistically higher in those variables and is therefore suitable for the production ofseedlings of this crop.O kiwano (Cucumis metuliferus) ¨¦ uma esp¨¦cie ex¨®tica, pertencente ¨¤ fam¨ªlia das Cucurbit¨¢ceas, possuindo um grande potencial para comercializa  o. Este trabalho teve como objetivo conhecer mais sobre a cultura do kiwano, atrav¨¦s do seu crescimento inicial em diferentes tipos de substratos, visto que s o poucos os trabalhos relacionados com esta cultura. O trabalho foi realizado em casa de vegeta  o, em Alegre-ES, num delineamento inteiramente casualizado com quatro repeti  es. Os tratamentos utilizados foram constitu¨ªdos dos seguintes substratos: Plantmax ; composto de leguminosa Acacia sp; composto de casca de arroz carbonizada + h¨²mus; composto de palha de milho + esterco; e composto de vermiculita + h¨²mus. Aos 28 dias ap¨®s a semeadura foram avaliadas a altura, a massa de mat¨¦ria fresca e a massa de mat¨¦ria seca das plantulas. O substrato Plantmax se mostrou mais eficiente na propaga  o inicial do kiwano, apresentando m¨¦dias estatisticamente superiores para asvari¨¢veis analisadas, sendo, portanto indicado para a produ  o de mudas desta cultura.
