First we focus on preliminary remarks; then we analyse the concepts of grammar that emerge from the description of sentence structure; finally, we review Montol¨ªu¡¯s analysis of parts of speech; their number, types, and characterisation. The paper is aimed at showing that Montol¨ªu¡¯s views are the result of an original combination of approaches. On the one hand, he connects the contributions of the Spanish Royal Academy of Language to the rigorous methods of rationalist philosophical traditions, for which grammar is a fundamental discipline. On the other, he relates the latter to the theories in vogue in his time; mainly, idealism and dialectology. In the harmony of this heterogeneous approach lie the interest and originality of his views. %K Spanish grammar %K Manuel de Montol¨ªu %K analytic method %K rationalism %K idealism %U http://www.rahl.com.ar/Revistas/I%20-%202011/battista-RAHL-%281%292011.pdf
