Tonometry is the measurement used to determine the fluid pressure inside the eye. Schiotz Tonometer after calibration was used in this study and the test was done in department of ophthalmology. Intraocular pressure is an important aspect in the evaluation of glaucoma. This study was conducted in healthy Muslim male subjects in fasting during the month of Ramadan since adequate aqueous flow is crucial for the health of the eye. Aim: The objective of this study was to find out the effect of religious fasting on Intraocular pressure. Methodology: Thirty healthy male subjects on religious fasting were selected randomly and Intraocular pressure was measured by Schiotz Tonometer after obtaining ethical approval. The subject was explained about the study .Written informed consent obtained from each subject. The other parameters like body weight, blood pressure and heart rate were also measured to assess the extent of dehydration. The same was documented forty five days later in the same individual. Observation: On analysis of the data, the subjects were categorized into two groups. The mean and standard deviation were calculated for all measured parameters. The significance of the difference in the values were analysed using students paired ¡®t¡¯ test. Results: Although each subject had weight loss of 1.5to 2 kg representing a slight dehydration caused by fasting, the difference in Intraocular pressure values was not statistically significant between fasting and non-fasting periods. Conclusion: Fasting did not alter the diurnal Intraocular pressure values in healthy male. %K Intraocular pressure %K Tonometry %K Fasting %U http://www.biomedscidirect.com/journalfiles/IJBMRF2011264/effect_of_religious_fasting_on_intraocular_pressure.pdf
