%X In the last few years there has been a dramatic increasein the sale of a new category of psychoactive compounds,colloquially called ¡°herbal highs¡±, ¡°legal highs¡±, or¡°designer drugs¡±, which commonly display similarchemical structure and pharmacological activity toexisting and illegal drugs of abuse. Among variousproducts of this kind are so-called ¡°spice¡± ¨C herbalmixtures containing synthetic cannabinoids that bind tocannabinoid receptors and exert more powerful effectsthan natural cannabis. This review surveys the currentstate of knowledge on synthetic cannabinoids present in¡°spice¡±, their pharmacological properties and analyticalmethods used for their identification. It also addressesthe negative consequences of using these products.
