%X El reconocimiento de la naturaleza colectiva de la producci車n de conocimiento desarrollada en 芍mbitos acad谷micos ha devenido un lugar com迆n. El grupo de investigaci車n constituye la m赤nima unidad espacio temporal de producci車n de conocimiento, de car芍cter colectivo. A pesar de que los grupos de investigaci車n forman parte habitual de la descripci車n de muchas entidades acad谷micas, ya sea a nivel institucional, o disciplinar-cognitivo, no han constituido un objeto privilegiado de la literatura especializada en ciencia, tecnolog赤a y sociedad. Una de las razones que probablemente explican esta ausencia se vincula a la dificultad de abordar emp赤ricamente estudios sistem芍ticos de grupos de investigaci車n. Este trabajo analiza la experiencia reciente de un estudio abarcativo de grupos de investigaci車n universitarios. El mismo implic車 la realizaci車n de una convocatoria de auto-identificaci車n en la Universidad de la Rep迆blica, Uruguay, efectuada sobre la base del reconocimiento de que la noci車n de identidad cumple un rol estructurante en la configuraci車n de grupos de investigaci車n. Se examinan las particularidades del abordaje utilizado para identificar y relevar informaci車n a los efectos de caracterizar grupos de investigaci車n universitarios. Adicionalmente, se analizan algunos resultados relacionados con las caracter赤sticas b芍sicas y las actividades de estas unidades colectivas de conocimiento. The recognition of the collective nature of knowledge production in academic settings is already a common place. The research group is the minimum time and space unit of knowledge production of a collective character. Despite the fact that research groups are often part of the description of many academic entities, at both institutional and cognitive levels, they have not become a privileged object of study in the specialized literature on science, technology and society. The difficult development of empirical approaches for the systematic study of research groups is one of the reasons that may explain its absence in the literature. This article analyzes the experience of a comprehensive recent study of university research groups. The study involved a call for the auto-identification of research groups at the Universidad de la Rep迆blica, Uruguay, based on the acknowledgment that the notion of identity plays a structuring role in the configuration of research groups. The article examines the particularities of the approach designed to identify university research groups and collect data for their characterization.
