The indebtedness of the Brazilian population is growing, and most of these debts come from credit cards. Many factors influence the growing indebtedness: low level of financial literacy, the dissemination of credit cards as well as the way they simplify transactions, and the growing offer of credit, among others. These and other factors seem to be contributing to the increase in Brazilian consumer¡äs expenses and indebtedness, leading to serious individual, social, and economic consequences. O objetivo do presente estudo ¨¦ realizar uma revis o te¨®rica sobre a influ¨ºncia do n¨ªvel de alfabetiza o financeira e do cart o de cr¨¦dito sobre o endividamento do consumidor brasileiro. Nos ¨²ltimos anos, o crescimento do endividamento da popula o brasileira bateu recordes e a maior parte das d¨ªvidas refere-se aos gastos com cart o de cr¨¦dito. V¨¢rios podem ser os fatores que influenciam esse fen meno: o baixo grau de alfabetiza o financeira, a dissemina o do cart o de cr¨¦dito e sua respectiva facilidade de uso, a populariza o da oferta de cr¨¦dito, dentre outros.
