%X Neste artigo procuramos estudar a forma como o escritor e jornalista Jos谷 Valentim Fialho de Almeida (1857-1911) viveu o turbulento per赤odo imediatamente ap車s o Ultimatum ingl那s de janeiro de 1890. Base芍mo-nos, essencialmente, nos artigos publicados em Os Gatos e em Pontos nos ii, de Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro. S o apresentadas as suas perspetivas sobre o Ultimatum e sobre o tratado anglo-luso de agosto de 1890, assim como sobre os planos governamentais para a coloniza  o africana, sobre a diplomacia portuguesa e, ainda, sobre a rea  o do povo portugu那s 角queles acontecimentos. This article aims to study how the writer and journalist Jos谷 Valentim Fialho de Almeida (1857-1911) lived the tumultuous period that immediately followed the British Ultimatum of January 1890. We present his perspectives on the Ultimatum itself and on the Anglo-Portuguese Treaty of August 1890, as well as on the governmental plans for African colonization, on Portuguese diplomacy, and on the reaction of the Portuguese peoples in the face of those events. The texts published by Fialho in Os Gatos and in Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro＊s Pontos nos ii were the primary sources used in the analysis.
