%X La multiplication des courriers ¨¦lectroniques professionnels, r¨¦sultat de l¡¯¨¦volution technologique comme de la globalisation, pose aux entreprises d¡¯envergure internationale un probl¨¨me, sinon nouveau, du moins de dimension nouvelle. Pour r¨¦pondre aux d¨¦fis de la communication institutionnelle (informer des publics de plus en plus diff¨¦renci¨¦s linguistiquement) et op¨¦rationnelle (permettre aux salari¨¦s de tous pays de communiquer entre eux), les multinationales adoptent une langue commune. C¡¯est l¡¯anglais (ELF ou English as a Lingua Franca) qui joue aujourd¡¯hui ce r le. Nous cherchons ¨¤ ¨¦valuer les effets d¡¯une telle utilisation sur la communication interculturelle en prenant appui sur l¡¯analyse de courriels ¨¦chang¨¦s entre des locuteurs de langues maternelles diff¨¦rentes. Cette analyse montre qu¡¯au del¨¤ des incompr¨¦hensions li¨¦es ¨¤ l¡¯usage d¡¯une langue souvent mal ma tris¨¦e, la culture des locuteurs, en renvoyant ¨¤ des univers de sens diff¨¦rents, tend ¨¤ brouiller, ou bloquer l¡¯intercompr¨¦hension ou   commun¡¯entente   tout en favorisant ce qui rel¨¨ve de la   commun¡¯action  . In a globalized world where e-mails have replaced traditional communication, multinationals face a linguistic problem which, although it is not new, has taken on a new dimension. In order to face the challenges of corporate communication (addressing an ever-growing and linguistically diverse audience) and operational communication (enabling employees around the world to work together), multinationals generally choose a common language : English as a lingua franca (ELF). Based on examples of professional e-mails exchanged between individuals speaking different mother-tongues, this article offers an assessment of the effects of such practice on intercultural communication. It shows that misunderstandings generally stem from the different ¡°worlds¡± in which the situations take their meanings rather than from mere linguistic clumsiness, leading to the conclusion that ELF can be considered as helping ¡°common¡¯action¡± (i.e. communication for action), while hindering or obstructing ¡°common¡¯understanding¡± (i.e. deeper understanding between the individuals).
