%X Les contraintes horaires et professionnelles des parents, les possibilit¨¦s institutionnelles et sociales dans la garde et la prise en charge des jeunes enfants, ont amen¨¦ les sociologues ¨¤ red¨¦finir les ¡°ages¡± de la petite enfance : 0-2 ans, la cr¨¨che ; 2-3 ans, le ¡°jardin d¡¯¨¦veil¡± ; ¨¤ partir de 3 ans, l¡¯¨¦cole maternelle, ¨¤ quoi il faut ajouter la garde ¨¤ domicile et pour les classes les plus ais¨¦es l¡¯employ¨¦e de maison. ¨¤ partir d¡¯entretiens avec les parents, ¨¦. Plaisance montre que les int¨¦ress¨¦s mettent en avant le libre choix (m¨ºme quant les offres sont rares) et soulignent sur le ton de l¡¯¨¦vidence que la solution retenue ¨¦tait la meilleure pour eux-m¨ºmes et pour l¡¯enfant. Mais les r¨¦ponses montrent aussi qu¡¯ils cherchent ¨¤ se renseigner, selon des modes qui favorisent le bouche ¨¤ oreille et laissent place aux ph¨¦nom¨¨nes de rumeur. De fait, le ¡°choix¡± des acteurs est d¨¦termin¨¦, mais comme pour se rassurer et assumer leur responsabilit¨¦, ils le d¨¦crivent volontiers comme ¡°libre¡±.Due to the constraints of parental work schedules, the institutional and social opportunities in minding and caring for young children have grown. This has led sociologists to redefine the 'ages' of early childhood. These are 0-2, the cr¨¨che, 2-3 the kindergarten and from three years, play school. To this must be added home care with a child-minder for wealthier classes. Based on interviews with parents, E. Plaisance shows that those involved put freedom of choice first (even when the choices are rare) and the weight of evidence underlines that the solution arrived at was the best for them and their child. But the responses also show that they try to inform themselves by ways that favour word of mouth and give room for rumour and hearsay. The 'choice' of those involved is constrained, but as if to reassure themselves and to show that they are assuming their responsibility, they willingly describe it as 'free'.
