%X RESUMO Este artigo traz uma discuss o acerca da importancia da an¨¢lise iconol¨®gica para a historiografia (pol¨ªtica, social, jur¨ªdica). Vistas nesta perspectiva, as artes visuais cont¨ºm conex o profunda com o passado em que foram elaboradas, trazendo ao presente princ¨ªpios, conven  es e sentidos que a motivaram. Para ilustrar nosso argumento, tomaremos um exemplo concreto. A primeira Rep¨²blica brasileira tinha de obter legitimidade e, particularmente, o Estado do Paran¨¢. Era um Estado recente, desprovido de s¨ªmbolos e tinha de cri¨¢-los. A an¨¢lise iconol¨®gica desvela o imagin¨¢rio que se constru¨ªa naquele momento. ABSTRACT This article brings a discussion on the importance of the iconological analysis to the (political, social, juridical) historiography. Viewed from this perspective, the visual arts contain a deep connection with the past in which they were developed, bringing to the present principles, conventions and meanings that motivated them. To illustrate our argument, we shall give a concrete example. The first Brazilian Republic had to obtain legitimacy and particularly the State of Paran¨¢. It was recent, devoid of symbols and had to create them. The iconological analysis discloses the imaginary that one builds in that moment.
