%T Sentido y usos de <i> ¨¡h</i> en biograf¨ªas de ulemas andalus¨ªes

%X This is a study of the meaning and uses of the term j¨¡h in the biographies of certain Andalusi  ulam¨¡ . Classical Arab lexicography describes j¨¡h as ¡°rank, station, or dignity, with, or in the estimation of, the sul ¨¡n¡±, but texts extracted from biographical literature show that j¨¡h is also linked to the possession of wealth, noble genealogical descent (though this is not always a necessary requisite), and above all, the existence of a system of distribution and circulation of favours, both material and symbolic, between possessors of j¨¡h and persons close to them. A significant tradition is identified, through which the term j¨¡h gradually acquires a religious character, since it was considered by some to be subject to the payment of zak¨¡t. Examples of the ¡°misuse¡± of j¨¡h by Andalusi  ulam¨¡  are also provided. In conclusion, it is proposed on the basis of numerous examples that the concept of j¨¡h belonged to a secular semantic field, and that its use in the biographies of  ulam¨¡  reveals the growing involvement of such scholars in the sphere of political and economic power. En las biograf¨ªas de cierto n¨²mero de ulemas andalus¨ªes aparece el t¨¦rmino  ¨¡h, al cual se dedica este estudio. Los lexic¨®grafos ¨¢rabes lo definen como  rango y posici¨®n ante el poder , pero el examen de los textos biogr¨¢ficos aqu¨ª reunidos muestra que, junto a ello, el  ¨¡h se define por la posesi¨®n de riquezas, la nobleza geneal¨®gica (un requisito no siempre presente) y, muy en especial, la existencia de un sistema de distribuci¨®n y circulaci¨®n de favores, materiales y simb¨®licos, entre los poseedores de  ¨¡h y las personas de su entorno. En este sentido, se identifica una tradici¨®n que trata de dotar al  ¨¡h de un car¨¢cter religioso, al considerarlo sometido al mismo azaque que los bienes materiales. Se ofrecen asimismo ejemplos del  mal uso  del  ¨¡h entre los ulemas andalus¨ªes. Como conclusi¨®n, se propone que el concepto de  ¨¡h pertenece a un repertorio sem¨¢ntico secular, aplicado a los ulemas cuando ¨¦stos se incorporan al aparato del poder pol¨ªtico y econ¨®mico, de lo cual se ofrecen numerosos ejemplos.
