%X We discuss the results of the article published by Lang BH et al. in Ann Surg Oncol (2013, PMID 23306906). In thyroid surgery, vascular sealing systems Harmonic Ligasure Ultracision   and   are preferred over systems using traditional vascular ligatures or clips as they are more effective in hemostasis and shorten the surgical time. Theoverall complication rate is low and no statistically significant differences with either technique. These systems reduce the overall cost by allowing thyroidectomies increase the number of patients operated at the same time with significant reduction of complications. According to the review by the authors The cost of thedevices in thyroidectomy may represent 15-20%. Results are typical when analyzing these technologies. The choice of technology depends on the surgeon's preference to be secure systems but different in their operating principles (ultrasound energy versus bipolar) and terminals have different ergonomics.
