%X Sign¨¦ le 10 avril 1998, l¡¯Accord du Vendredi Saint souhaitait officialiser la fin de la violence afin d¡¯offrir un cadre juridique capable de rassembler les ennemis d¡¯hier autour d¡¯un projet commun dans une soci¨¦t¨¦ profond¨¦ment divis¨¦e : les signataires de l¡¯Accord offraient ¨¤ l¡¯Irlande du Nord les bases d¡¯un nouveau d¨¦part. Pour y parvenir, il ¨¦tait in¨¦vitable de passer par une mixit¨¦ mutuellement accept¨¦e, la seule voie possible vers la cr¨¦ation d¡¯une soci¨¦t¨¦ fond¨¦e sur des bases nouvelles. Mais qu¡¯entend-on exactement par mixit¨¦ dans le contexte nord-irlandais ? Le terme peut para tre ambigu car s¡¯il est synonyme de division, il ¨¦voque en m¨ºme temps la possibilit¨¦ d¡¯une int¨¦gration, d¡¯un m¨¦lange ou d¡¯un brassage. La situation de l¡¯Irlande du Nord est ¨¤ ce point complexe que le terme de mixit¨¦ rev¨ºt bien des aspects souvent contradictoires. Signed on April 10, 1998, the Good Friday Agreement was intended to officialise the end to violence and offer a legal framework with a common aim which would bring together former enemies in a profoundly divided society. The signatories of the Agreement offered Northern Ireland the basis of a new departure. To achieve that, the mutual acceptance of a mixed society was an inevitable step, the only possible path towards the creation of a society based on new terms. What exactly is meant by a mixed society in the Northern Irish context? The term may seem ambiguous for it is both synonymous with division and at the same time allows for possible integration, mixing and recomposition. The complexity of the situation in Northern Ireland leads to many a contradictory aspect.
