%X No presente trabalho analisou-se as representa  es sociais dos catadores de lixo de um munic赤pio de Sergipe, atrav谷s do estudo dos sentimentos auto atribu赤dos, das expectativas de vida, dos conceitos atribu赤dos 角 m o-de-obra na lixeira e das rela  es entre essas tr那s vari芍veis. Para tanto, foi aplicada a entrevista a trabalhadores do lix o, no pr車prio local onde labutam. Procurando obter uma melhor compreens o da exclus o social bem como de seus efeitos, foi feito 每 antes da an芍lise dos dados 每 um estudo a respeito da mesma desde a origem do seu recrudescimento no Brasil at谷 a sua atual forma de manifesta  o em Sergipe. Em seguida, apresentou-se o quadro te車rico contemplando as defini  es referentes ao estere車tipo, preconceito, discrimina  o, representa  o social, identidade social e outros conceitos, destacando as ideias de Allport sobre o preconceito e de Moscovici sobre as representa  es sociais. Atrav谷s dessas concep  es, examinaram-se os discursos que foram obtidos mediante a aplica  o de uma entrevista aberta com roteiro semiestruturado. A an芍lise dos dados revelou que, n o obstante as aparentes diverg那ncias entre as respostas, todos os sujeitos apresentaram dois elementos comuns que perpassaram os seus discursos e comportamentos: a vergonha e o sofrimento. Ambos revelaram a incid那ncia da discrimina  o e do preconceito sobre os catadores de lixo. Devido a essa situa  o eles elaboraram representa  es negativas de si. In the present study analyzes the social representations of the garbage from a city of Sergipe, through the study of self assigned feelings, expectations of life, the concepts attributed to manpower in the trash and the relationships between these three variables. To this end, the interview was applied to workers of the garbage dump on the spot where toil. Achieving a better understanding of social exclusion as well as its effects have been done 每 before the data analysis 每 a study about the same since the beginning of its resurgence in Brazil to its current manifestation of the disease in Sergipe. Then presented the theoretical framework covering definitions related to the stereotype, prejudice, discrimination, social representation, identity and other social concepts, highlighting Allport＊s ideas about prejudice and about the social representations Moscovici. Through these concepts, we examined the speeches that were obtained by applying an open interview with a semi-structured. Data analysis revealed that, despite the apparent discrepancies between the responses, all subjects showed two common elements that have marked his speeches
