%X RESUMEN En 1969, el Ministerio de Educaci車n y Ciencia convoca tres concursos sucesivos de anteproyectos para las nuevas Universidades Aut車nomas de Madrid, Bilbao y Barcelona. El contexto hist車rico, cultural y social es propicio para el lanzamiento de una empresa de tal envergadura; las reflexiones en torno a los concursos de arquitectura se multiplican en las revistas especializadas, y la incipiente democratizaci車n de la sociedad espa ola tiene su reflejo tanto en la proliferaci車n de este tipo de procedimientos abiertos y competitivos, como en la reforma educativa impulsada en aquellos a os por el ministro Villar Palas赤 con el objeto de garantizar el acceso universal a la educaci車n y la igualdad de oportunidades. Incluso el proceso de proyecto de la mayor parte de las propuestas presentadas a los tres concursos evidencia el favor del que gozan entonces los sistemas abiertos y flexibles, aptos para acomodar unas estructuras universitarias en constante cambio y crecimiento. Este art赤culo trata, pues, del planteamiento, los resultados y las encendidas pol谷micas 〞a partir de la cr車nica detallada que de ellas hacen las revistas de arquitectura de la 谷poca〞 que suscitaron los que en su d赤a fueranconsiderados los concursos de arquitectura m芍s importantes celebrados en Espa a desde la posguerra.SUMMARY In 1969, the Ministry of Education and Science announced three successive competitions for provisional proposals for the new Autonomous Universities of Madrid, Bilbao and Barcelona. The historical, cultural and social contexts favoured the launching of an enterprise of such magnitude. The reflections on architectural competitions multiplied in the specialist journals, and the incipient democratization of Spanish society is reflected both in the proliferation of these types of open and competitive procedures, and in the educational reforms of the time driven by Minister Villar Palas赤, in order to ensure universal access to education and equal opportunities. Even the planning process of most of the proposals submitted to the three competitions demonstrated the favour that was then enjoyed by the open and flexible systems, which were capable of adapting university structures, in constant change and growth. From the detailed accounts about them in the architectural magazines of the time, this article deals with the approach, the results and the heated controversies caused by what were considered, at the time, to be the most important architectural competitions held in Spain since the war.
