%X Central to the so-called ethical doctrine of Epicurus, the theme of friendship in this paper is analyzed under three aspects: a) in regards to its link to the traditional principles (the so-called golden rule) with which several cultures have sought to govern friendly relations; b) how Epicurus, in a sense different from that of Plato¡¯s Academy took to the Garden the practice of phil¨ªa as a test for reconstituting the p¨®lis; c) how the concept of utility (the ophele¨ªa) is linked to interest and reciprocity.
