%0 Journal Article %T The Hero and His Shadow %A Simona Micali %J Image and Narrative : Online Magazine of the Visual Narrative %D 2010 %I Katholieke Universiteit Leuven %X (E): This essay traces the literary theme of the ¡®disobedient shadow¡¯ from the Romantic archetype to its adaptation nineteenth- and twentieth-century fantastic fiction. Focusing on texts in which the shadow takes up its own identity, becoming an uncanny double of its master, it is argued that the development of this theme is closely linked with the evolution of the human subject through the epistemological and cultural revolutions of the last two centuries. (F): Cet article retrace l¡¯¨¦volution du th¨¨me litt¨¦raire de l¡¯ ombre d¨¦sob¨¦issante , de l¡¯arch¨¦type romantique aux mutations ult¨¦rieures dans la fiction fantastique des 19e et 20e si¨¨cles. Il examine un corpus o¨´ l¡¯ombre assume son ind¨¦pendance, devenant un double de son ma tre dans un esprit que l¡¯on sait ¨ºtre maintenant celui de l¡¯inqui¨¦tante ¨¦tranget¨¦.
