%X The aerial bombardment suffered by the Basque city of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War created a great commotion worldwide. Pablo Picasso painted a picture called Guernica that was shown in the International Exhibition of Paris, celebrated in 1937, turning it into the icon of the genocide suffered by that place. At the same time, since the Spanish Civil War was an important experience for the modern press photography, it calls the attention that the icon is a painting and not a photograph. Therefore this article analyzes the reasons why the pictorial expression imposed itself on the photographic expression, as well as the passage of the symbol represented by Picasso. El bombardeo a谷reo sufrido por la ciudad vasca de Guernica durante la Guerra Civil Espa ola cre車 una gran conmoci車n a nivel internacional. Pablo Picasso pint車 un cuadro titulado Guernica que se exhibi車 en la Exposici車n Internacional de Par赤s que se celebr車 en 1937, convirti谷ndose en el icono del genocidio sufrido por la ciudad vasca. Al mismo tiempo, como la Guerra Civil Espa ola fue una experiencia importante para la fotograf赤a de prensa moderna llama la atenci車n que el icono sea una pintura y no una fotograf赤a, por lo que se analiza los motivos por los que la expresi車n pict車rica se impuso a la expresi車n fotogr芍fica, as赤 como el discurrir del s赤mbolo representado por el cuadro de Picasso.
