%0 Journal Article %T Summary of the results of an educational research program on gastroesophageal reflux disease %A Jacek Muszy¨½ski %A Pawe£¿ Kotarski %A Agnieszka Ehrmann-J¨®£¿ko %J Polish Gastroenterology %D 2012 %I %X Introduction: Gastroesophageal reflux disease is a chronic condition affecting 10-20% of the population in Western countries. Aim of the study: The disease impairs the quality of life and generates social costs associated with treatment and absenteeism at work. The purpose of the education research program was to assess the patients¡¯ knowledge of prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the disease. Material and methods: In the years 2009-2011, 348 physicians (educators) participated in the program, and the research involved 37 567 patients. The study consisted in performing a test of knowledge by means of a questionnaire, then conducting an educational discussion. Results: It was found that the patients¡¯ level of knowledge about the disease is improving, but is still insufficient.
